Privacy
MetaChapel is a quiet place. We collect as little as possible.
Guests: no sign-up
You don’t need to sign up or give us your name or email to use MetaChapel. As a guest, you are given a calming name such as “Gentle Dove” at random on your first visit, remembered on your device only.
Signing in (optional)
You can choose to sign in, with a link we email you or with your Google account, so your candles, purchases and private journey are there on any device. Then we keep: your email address (and, with Google, your Google account ID) only to recognise you when you sign in, the username you choose, and your collection (the candles you lit, your journey, your rosary count, your random name and look). With Google, we receive only your email address and account ID, nothing else. Your email is never shown to anyone. You choose in Settings whether others see your username or a random name, and you can sign out at any time; signing out removes your collection from that device. Usernames must be kind: abusive words are refused. To have your account deleted, write to us at the address below.
What stays on your device
Your assigned name, sound settings and your private journey (days of visits, prayer and candles) are saved in your own browser’s storage. Clearing your browser data removes them (if you are signed in, a copy is kept with your account).
What our server keeps
So that nothing you buy is ever lost, our server keeps an anonymous random ID for your browser, the items you have bought, and a simple record of what was done with that ID and when (for example visits, candles lit, blessings given and purchases). For guests it never includes your name, email or other personal details. When you sign in, the things kept under your device’s ID are moved to your account. Candles, ribbons and prayer-book signatures you share in a room are shown to others in that room for as long as they last. We use the anonymous record only to count how MetaChapel is used and to stop automated misuse.
Moving between metachapel.com and xanaduwu.com
MetaChapel (metachapel.com) and XanadUwU (xanaduwu.com, our other calm places) are one site on two addresses. Your browser keeps what is saved on your device separately for each address, so when you go from one to the other (for example from the chapel to the Places page), your given name and look, your journey, your collection and your anonymous ID are passed along once through our server with a one-time code. The code works only once and for two minutes, and nothing from it is kept.
Reminders (only if you ask)
After you light a candle you can ask for a reminder at the evening vigil, or to be told when someone prays with your candle. These come as notifications from your browser (web push) or, if you choose to leave your email, as an email. We keep your email only for this, send at most one message a day, and every email has a one-tap link to stop. Emails are sent through Resend. Memorial candles can have a yearly anniversary email, the same way.
Names you write
If you light a candle for someone, the first name you write is shown on that candle's page. A memorial candle's name and dates are shown on the memorial stand and on its page. Please write only what you are happy for others to see.
Payments
Optional purchases and support are handled by PayPal, or by Stripe where PayPal is not available. You can pay with a PayPal account or a card. MetaChapel never sees or stores your card details. Monthly support can be stopped at any time in your PayPal or Stripe account. PayPal’s and Stripe’s own privacy statements apply to the payment.
Things your browser loads from others
- Cloudflare hosts MetaChapel and keeps standard technical logs (such as IP address and pages requested) for security and reliability.
- Google Fonts provides the lettering.
- Etsy provides the pictures of Bible art in the chapel shop. Tapping one opens Etsy.
- PayPal (or Stripe’s card page) loads only when you choose to pay.
- Google sign-in opens only if you choose “Continue with Google”.
Children
MetaChapel has no chat, and guests give no personal details, so it is suitable for families. Signing in and purchases should be done by an adult.
